FAMOUS KAMMA PERSONALITIES IN MEDICINE
1) Dr.Govindappa Venkataswamy Sayiampu
Dr.Govindappa Venkataswamy (1918–2006, b. Vadamalapuram, near Sivakasi, Virudhunagar dist, Tamil Nadu) is an Indian ophthalmologist and 1973 recipient of Padma Sri award.
Born in 1918 in Vadamalapuram in Tamil Nadu, India, Dr.G.Venkataswamy, Founder, Aravind Eye Hospital had his education at American College, Madurai, Stanley Medical College, Madras and qualified for MS Ophthalmology at the Government Ophthalmic Hospital, Madras. He first joined the Indian Army as Physician during 1945-48. He then was appointed Head of Department of Ophthalmology at the Government Madurai Medical College, and eye surgeon at the Government Erskine Hospital at Madurai. He held these posts for 20 years and made remarkable contributions to research, clinical service and community programmes.
A quarter of a century ago, at mandatory retirement age, fifty eight year old Dr.Venkataswamy, a man known to most of us simply as Dr.V, founded the Aravind Eye Hospital at Madurai in 1977.
He has an amazing ability to use everyone effectively. He is the father of Community Ophthalmology, and because of his ‘Vision’ numerous people have been able to see again. It was his dream of being able to market ‘good eye-sight’ to the world.

2) Dr.Perumalsamy Namperumalsamy Ravilla
Perumalsamy Namperumalsamy is an Indian ophthalmologist who specializes in diabetic retinopathy. He is also a a retina-vitreous expert. Namperumalsamy is currently the chairman of Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. He is known for bringing assembly-line efficiency to eye surgery. In 2010, TIME magazine named Namperumalsamy one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
After graduating with a medical degree from the University of Madras in 1963, he decided to continue his studies to specialize in ophthalmology. Upon receiving his master’s degree in 1970, he left his native country temporarily to acquire the necessary training in the field that had become his passion.
A postgraduate fellow of the University of Illinois, Chicago, Namperumalsamy started the India’s first Low Vision Aid Centre at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai in 1971. He is currently the chairman of Aravind Eye Hospital. Namperumalsamy is a reciepient of Padma Shri Award from the Government of India.

3) Dr.Kakarla Subba Rao
Dr Kakarla Subba Rao was born on 25 January, 1925 in a middle class agricultural family at Pedamuttevi, in Krishna District. In 1944 he joined Andhra Medical College at Vizag and passed MBBS in 1950. Having completed his internship at K.G. Hospital, Vizag in 1951, Dr Subbarao left for USA for higher studies, on a special scholarship. In 1955, he cleared his American Board Exam in Radiology. During 1954-1956 Dr Kakarla worked as a 'Special Fellow' in Radiology at New York and Baltimore. He became Professor of Radiology and Chief Radiologist, Osmania University. Dr Kakarla left for United States in 1970. In 1973 Dr. Subba Rao became a 'Fellow of Royal College of Radiologists (UK) Till 1986 he was associated with faculty of Radiology at different medical institutions in America. He had joined in NIMS (Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences) in 1986 as Director. In recognition of his contributions to the field of Radiology, the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association has confrred on hin the prestigious 'Radiologist of the Millennium' award in the year 2000. The Government of India honoured Dr Kakarla Subba Rao with 'Padma Sri' on 26 January 2000, in recognition of his valuable contributions in the field of medicine. He was also the founder president of Telugu Association of North America (TANA).

4) Dr. Gullapalli Nageswara Rao
Dr Gullapalli Nageswara Rao, is the Founder and Director of the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in India. His international work and standing is epitomised by his appointment as Secretary-General of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (1998-present), and former Chairman of the South-East Region (1994-1999). He is also Executive Officer of the International Contact Lens Society of Ophthalmologists; One of the Chairs of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalist (50 top elected academicians in ophthalmology); President of the Asia Pacific Region and Member of the Board of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (1995-present); Member of the International Advisory Committee of the International Federation of Eye Banks (1995-present); Member of the International Medical Advisory Board of Orbis International (1994-present), and Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Awards include: Ranbaxy Research Award for contributions to medical science 1995; Louis Emile Jal Silver Service Award from the International Contact Lens Council of Ophthalmology 1994; Outstanding Service Award of the Association of Asian Indians in Ophthalmology 1984; Honor Award of the Telugu Association of North America for outstanding accomplishments in medicine; the Honor Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology 1983; and the Padmashri award by the Indian Government for his contribution to medicine and ophthalmology 2002. 5) Dr.Mukkamala Apparao
Dr.Mukkamala Apparao, who was born in Krishna District,He studied at Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada. Mukkamala earned his degree from the Guntur Medical College, and completed his internship at St. Margaret's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala is the Chairman Department Of Radiology, Hurley Medical Centre, Michigan, USA. He is a Board Certified Radiologist for Nuclear Radiology and Pediatric Radiology from American Board Of Radiology and member of American Medical Association and Michigan State Medical Society, Radiological Society of North America and Chairman and Member of several Internationally reputed Medical Associations.
Dr. Mukkamala, who heads the conglomerate of NRI doctors who had set up NRI Medical College and NRI General Hospital along with educational institutions in 2004, was recently awarded the Distinguished Citizen award by Michigan State of the USA.

6) Dr.Prabhakara Rao Tripuraneni
Dr.Prabhakara Rao Tripuraneni The American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) has elected Scripps Clinic radiation oncologist Prabhakar Tripuraneni, M.D., F.A.C.R, as its new President. He has been active in ASTRO (www.astro.org) since 1982 serving on numerous committees and task forces and is currently the Senior Editor of ASTRO news as well as chairing the Information Technology and Resource Development committee. ASTRO is the largest radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 7,000 members who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. As a leading organization in radiation oncology, biology and physics, the Society’s mission is to advance the practice of radiation oncology by promoting excellence in patient care, providing opportunities for educational and professional development, promoting research and disseminating research results and representing radiation oncology in a rapidly evolving socioeconomic healthcare environment. He has written dozens of articles on the subject, authored a book, and has delivered more than 150 lectures worldwide. CART was approved by the FDA in 2000 and has prevented coronary restenosis in thousands of patients. Since 1996, he has been selected by his peers as one of The 'Best Doctors in America'.
He is a graduate of Guntur Medical College, Guntur, India. He completed a radiation oncology residency at the University of Alberta in Canada and also at the University of California at San Francisco.

7) Dr.Kalpalatha Guntupalli
Hyderabad born Guntupalli is currently tenured full professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, considered one of the top 10 medical schools in the US, and also chief of pulmonary/critical care and sleep division at BCM.
Guntupalli did her MD from the Institute of Medical Sciences, Osmania Medical College, Hydrabad, before migrating to the US in 1974 to specialise in internal medicine.
She has received numerous awards including the prestigious ‘Parker J Palmer Courage to Teach’ award for 2007 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, making her one of just 10 program directors to receive the honour.She was President, American College of Chest Physicians, 2009-2010.

8) Dr.Yarlagadda Nayudamma
Dr.Y.Nayudamma was born on 1-6-1947 in Karamchedu, Prakasam District. He did his MBBS in Guntur Medical College, MS (Gen-Surgery) in Rohtak Medical College, Rohtak and M.Ch. (Pead.Surgery) in AIMS New Delhi. He worked at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi as Senior Resident in Pediatric Surgery from Aug 1975 - Aug 1978. He was appointed as Asst. Professor of Pediatric Surgery at Guntur Medical College Guntur from Sep 1978. He worked as civil assistant Surgeon in Govt. General Hospital Guntur between Feb 1982 and 1984.Subsequently he was elevated in the same institution to the post of Professor & Head of Pediatric Surgery & Chief Pediatric Surgeon in Aug 1984.He continues to work in the same post till todate. He is also the Vice Principal of Guntur Medical College since dec-2000. He had successfully separate three sets of Conjoined Twins.

9) Dr.Pinnamaneni Narasimha Rao
Dr.Pinnamaneni Narasimha Rao is the founder member of Association Of Otolaryngologists Of India was born in 1914 in Neppalli in Krishna District. Being born and bred in an atmosphere of service, altruism and humanism, it was natural that Dr. Narasimha Rao later in his life devoted his professional career to the cause of humanity.
He joined the Visakhapatnam Medical College soon after his Intermediate and graduated in Medicine in 1939. In 1946. Dr. Narasimha Rao obtained the M.S. Degree of Andhra University in Otolaryngology.he was awarded F.I.C.S. in 1955 and F.AC.S. in 1959. He in recognition of his eminent services as a researcher in E.N.T. diseases was conferred Honorary D.Sc. of Andhra University and of the Nagarjuna University in 1978 and 1984 respectively. He was elected as President of the Medical Council of India in August 1994.
He was elected President of the International Medical Science Academy in 1990 and 1995 each for a period of 5 years. Dr. Narasimha Rao was honoured with the award of Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow (F.R.C.s.) in 1993. He has received many honours and distinctions as eminent medical-man. medical scientist. administrator and social worker.
He was awarded the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy's National Award under the category of "Eminent Medicalman" for the year 1993.

10) Dr.Lingam Suryanarayana
Dr.Lingam Suryanarayana MBBS, MS, FACS is distinguished Surgeon of Andhra Pradesh. He was Principal of Andhra and Guntur Medical Colleges and Vice Chancellor of NTR University of Health Sciences.
He was born on 16 May 1923. He completed a M.B.B.S. degree in 1946 and a M.S. degree in General Surgery in 1949 from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam.
His administrative capabilities took him the post of Pro Vice Chancellor of Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences in 1987 and later became Vice Chancellor on 22 February 1988 till 18 April 1994. As Vice chancellor he visited Japan, USA, Canada, Geneva and Bangkok as a WHO participant.
He is life member of Indian Medical Association, Association of Surgeons of India and Indian Association for Advancement of Medical Education. He was founder President of Andhra Pradesh Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and International College of Surgeons and Honorary Fellow of International Medical Sciences Academy.

11) Dr. Lavu Narendranath
Dr.Lavu Narendranath, Professor, Department of Orthopaedics has beeen awarded with the prestigious "Padmashree" (2005) in recognition of his team work for poliomyelities affected children.

12) Dr.Korrapati Chiranjeevi
Dr.Korrapati Chiranjeevi, MDS, MS(Dental): Was born on 1933 in a village near Puttur, Chittor District. He did his Master Degree in Mumbai and got his Doctors (Dental) degree from London. Dr.Chiranjeevi had stareted his career aas a tutor in Osmania University Dental College and retired as Principal in 1991. He was President, Indian Dental Association A.P Chapter; Member, All Indian Dental Council and also Member of Board of Studies A.P. Health University, Madras University, Bangalore and Osmania Universities.

13) Dr.Ratnam V Mullapudi
Dr. Ratnam V Mullapudi is the Founder of the Usha Mullapudi Cardiac Centre (UMCC), a superspeciality, non profit hospital built on the specifications of American Medical Association. Was graduated from Andhra Medical College in 1962, went to USA, and took training from Albany medical center, Albany in New York for 10 years. Then started his own practice in Cardiac Surgery, near Chicago. In 1995 he worked for two years in NIMS hospital, as a consultant Cardiac Surgeon on voluntary basis.

14) Dr.Mannam Gopi Chand
Dr. Gopichand Mannam graduated from Guntur Medical College, Guntur, AP, in April 1981. He left India immediately for West Indies, where he developed his initial skills in surgery. In 1983, he went to the UK to pursue his career in general surgery. He appeared and passed FRCS in General surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 1986 and The Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow in 1987.
After finishing his formal training in general surgery, he has joined Cardio-Thoracic speciality. During his training, he worked at some of the world-renowned hospitals like the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, and the Royal Brompton and National Heart Hospital, London.In November 1994, he went back to India and joined the Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, as a senior Consultant in Cardio-Thoracic surgery. Later, in June 1997, he has joined Medwin Hospital, Hyderabad as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon. From There he Moved to CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad as Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in 2002.
Currently, he is at STAR hospitals, Banjara Hills as Chief of Cardiothoracic surgery. His main interests are congenital cardiac surgery and Coronary artery bypass on a beating heart (OPCAB). So far he has done more than 12,000 heart operations.

15) Dr.G.Bakthavathsalam
Born on April 5, 1942 at Annur and graduated (MBBS - 1964) from Madras Medical College, and also having obtained an MS from the same college, he had his post graduate training in Surgery in Mount Sinai Hospital, Chicago (USA). On the clarion call given by his father, Dharmaveera K. Govindaswamy Naidu, to serve the poor countrymen in the field of healthcare, he returned to India in the year 1974 to set up K.G. Hospital. Initially, ten beds were put up. It has now grown into a 550-bedded multi and super speciality and post graduate medical center - a "Centre of Excellence" recognized in India and abroad and this hospital has the pride of treating over 4 million patients.
He has been President of: Indian Medical Association, Association of Surgeons of India
Awards conferred on Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam: Dr. B.C. Roy Award (1984) from the Prime Minister of India, Padma Shri Award (2005), Life Time Achievement Award (2010) - Madras Medical College.

16) Dr. Kancherla Ravindranath
Dr. K.Ravindranth, Managing Director of Global Hospitals graduated from Sr.Venkateswar a Medical College, Tirupathi in 1980 and attained his Masters in Surgery in 1984 from Madras University. He obtained FRCS of Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1985. He has worked in prestigious hospitals like Hammersmith Hospital, King's College Hospital and St. Marks's Hospital in Londoan. After his return to India in 1990, he established the Dept. Of Surgical Gastroenterology & Laparoscopic Surgery at Appolo Hospital, Hyderabad, Which he headed tii April 1999. He established Global Hospital, the exclusive institute of gastroenterology and Laparoscopic surgery at Hyderabad in 1999. He has performed a large number of laparoscopic surgeries and all types of advanced open surgeries like liver resections, intestinal fistule, AP resections, Whipples's resections, pouch surgeries.
